Regional Methamphetamine Legislative Conferences
The National Alliance for Model State Drug Laws (NAMSDL) agreed
to partner with the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP),
Office Justice Programs/Bureau of Justice Assistance (OJP/BJA), and
the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
to conduct four (4) regional planning events to assist states, counties
or other localities, and tribal governments with their legislative
and policy efforts to address methamphetamine and its related issues.
Each
regional is intended to result in
- a legislative and policy
action plan for each state and its counties or other localities
and for the region,
- identification of laws and policies that
are working or having positive benefits for a state and its
localities that might be worthy of replication in other states
in the region,
- identification of issues, concerns, problems
that exist in multiple states, including those that require interstate
resolutions,
- identification of the needs and priorities of
tribal governments,
- identification of the needs for federal
assistance by states, counties or other localities, and tribes,
and federal requests for assistance from other levels of
government, and
- identification of issues, concerns, and initiatives
that may require collaboration among federal, state, county
or other local officials and tribal governments to resolve.
In
order to accomplish these objectives, each regional event will
include:
- a multidisciplinary selection of individuals from
the states and tribes in the region,
- plenary sessions
to inform discussion and planning, and
- a focus on facilitated
working groups designed to produce prioritized actions plans.
For each regional conference, NAMSDL prepared a compilation to reflect
the recommendations, priorities, and action plans identified in each
working group at the conferences. See the links to the compilations
for each regional conference below. In addition, at the request of
NAMSDL, Carnevale Associates, based on a review of Conference-related
materials, produced a written memorandum discussing potential implications
for national and regional policies on methamphetamine and other drug
and alcohol issues. These memorandums are available with the event
details.
